Musical Mosaics: World Jazz Workshop

SIORA plays world jazz, songs from around the world expressed through the language of jazz. Our goal is to let workshop participants experience how several important elements of music, each found in multiple traditions, can transcend their geneologies to become part of a rich new mosaic.

Tailored for all age groups, this workshop involves a multi-layered audience performance, includinghands-on experiences with instruments, demonstrating several musical techniques common to many cultures. The workshop ends with a carnival samba dance lesson, in which audience volunteers learn and perform a simple and colorful choreographed carnival samba.

Latin American Rhythms Workshop

Students will enjoy this interactive learning experience of Latin American sounds and rhythms!
Three fundamental rhythms will be explored: African 6/8, Afro-Cuban clave and Brazilian samba.

Section one is a multi-layered audience call and response performance utilizing compound rhythmic structures.

In section two members of SIORA demonstrate the instrumental roles in Afro-cuban clave.

In section three audience members join SIORA in a samba Batucada (Brazilian percussion ensemble) augmented by a carnival dance lesson.
